Deridder – On January 10, 2026, shortly after 5:00 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop D began investigating a fatal crash involving a motorcycle on Virgil Sims Road near Pete Wyatt Road. The crash claimed the life of 18-year-old Nicholas Johnson of Newbern, Alabama.
 
The preliminary investigation revealed that Johnson was riding a 2025 Kawasaki Ninja Zx-6 north on Virgil Sims Road. For reasons still under investigation, the motorcycle traveled off the roadway, entered a ditch, struck a culvert, and ejected Johnson.
 
Johnson, who was wearing a DOT-approved helmet at the time of crash, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on the scene.
 
Standard toxicology samples were collected and submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.
