Slidell – On Thursday, December 11, 2025, around 7:00 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a two-vehicle crash on I-10 near LA 433 (Old Spanish Trail) in St. Tammany Parish. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 61-year-old Brian Chappell of Laplace. The preliminary investigation revealed that Chappell was driving a 2011 Harley-Davidson Motorcycle west on I-10 near LA 433, in the right lane. At the same time, a 2019 Cadillac Escalade was traveling west on I-10 near LA 433, in the center lane. For reasons still under investigation, the Harley-Davidson crossed into the center lane and struck the right rear of the Cadillac. Chappell lost control of the Harley-Davidson and ran off the road before crashing into a ditch. Despite wearing a DOT-approved helmet, Chappell suffered serious injuries and died on scene. The passenger, who was also wearing a DOT-approved helmet, was transported to a local hospital, where they remain in critical condition. At the time of the crash, the driver of the Cadillac was properly restrained and uninjured. As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples were collected from both drivers. This crash remains under investigation. Whether on a motorcycle or in a vehicle, drivers should make good decisions while traveling. Vehicle operators should practice safe and responsible behavior, including following speed limits, wearing a DOT-approved helmet while on a motorcycle or a seatbelt in a vehicle, and never operating their vehicle while impaired. It is crucial to remember that speeding decreases reaction time, increases stopping distance, heightens the risk of losing control of your vehicle, and reduces the effectiveness of safety devices such as helmets and seatbelts in the event of a crash.
