1753 2025-04-01 Troop F Pedestrian Killed in Ouachita Parish Crash

Sterlington – On Monday, March 31, 2025, shortly after 9:00 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop F began investigating a crash involving a pedestrian on Louisiana Highway 143 near Jaried Road. The crash claimed the life of 69-year-old Rhonda Harvey of Springhill.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2009 GMC Sierra was driving north in the right northbound lane of Louisiana Highway 143. At the same time, Harvey, who was wearing dark clothing, was walking in the right northbound lane of Louisiana Highway 143. For reasons still under investigation, Harvey was struck by the GMC.

Harvey suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the GMC was properly restrained and uninjured. Although impairment is not suspected, routine toxicology samples were collected and will be submitted for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

Pedestrian safety is paramount when walking near and crossing roadways. To stay safe, pedestrians should always walk while facing oncoming traffic. This allows pedestrians to see oncoming vehicles and react appropriately. Additionally, when walking at night, wear brightly colored clothing or reflective gear to make it easier for drivers to see you. These simple yet vital precautions can help keep pedestrians safe and reduce the likelihood of pedestrian-involved crashes.
