Impairment Suspected in Livingston Parish Fatality

Walker – On December 22, 2012 at approximately 11:30 pm, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA Hwy 447 south of I-12 in Livingston Parish. The crash took the life of 60 year old Denham Springs resident Johnnie W. Johnson.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Johnson was driving a 1997 Ford F-150 southbound on LA Hwy 447. For unknown reasons Johnson failed to negotiate a left hand curve, and his vehicle ran off the roadway to the right. After leaving the roadway, Johnson overcorrected causing his vehicle to cross back across both lanes of LA Hwy 447. The F-150 exited the roadway and struck a utility pole.

Johnson was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained fatal injuries from the crash. Troopers suspect impairment on the part of Johnson to have been a factor in the crash, and have submitted a toxicology sample to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis.

Despite the fact that the number of deaths and serious injuries due to impaired drivers has decreased in recent years, impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana. Whether impaired through alcohol, drugs, or a combination of the two, the consequences of driving while impaired remain the same. As a busy Christmas and New Year’s Holiday approaches, Troopers reminds motorists to drive carefully and make it a safe holiday season for everyone traveling on Louisiana’s roadways.
