TROOP A NEWS RELEASE

Unrestrained Driver Killed in Livingston Parish Fatal Crash

Watson – This afternoon shortly after 2:00 pm, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash that occurred on LA Hwy 1019 east of LA Hwy 16 in Livingston Parish. The crash took the life of 60 year old Greenwell Springs resident Walter C. Phillips, Jr.

The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Phillips, Jr. was driving a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser westbound on LA Hwy 1019. For unknown reasons, Phillips, Jr. failed to negotiate a right hand curve causing his PT Cruiser to exit the roadway to the right. Phillips, Jr. overcorrected, and his vehicle reentered the roadway and crossed into the eastbound lane of travel. Upon doing so, the PT Cruiser was struck on the passenger side by an eastbound 2012 Peterbilt tractor-trailer being driven by 55 year old Jeffery L. Thompson of Denham Springs.

Phillips, Jr. was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained fatal injuries from the crash. Driver impairment is unknown at this time; however, Troopers have submitted a toxicology sample from Phillips, Jr. to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Thompson was properly restrained and was uninjured in the crash.

Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of seatbelt use. Louisiana law requires that every person in a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a violent crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Taking the time to buckle up before every trip is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
