Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP A- NEWS RELEASE One-Vehicle Crash Claims the Life of Kenner Man CONVENT- On August 22, 2008, at 8:25 a.m., troopers with Louisiana State Police- Troop A investigated a one-vehicle crash in St. James Parish on LA Highway 44 south of LA Highway 3214 at Hotard Road which resulted in the death of Kenner man. Deshawn J. Smith (B/M, age 17) was traveling southbound on LA Hwy 44 in his 2002 Pontiac Grand Am when he lost control of his vehicle in a curve. As the road curved to the left, Smith’s vehicle began to rotate clockwise and exited the roadway to the right where it struck a utility pole on the driver’s side. Smith sustained serious injuries in the crash and was transported by Acadian AirMed to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. He was later pronounced dead by hospital staff due to injuries sustained in the crash. Smith was wearing his seatbelt. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in this crash but blood was taken from Smith and will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. Results are still pending.
