TROOP A- NEWS RELEASE

July 11, 2008

54 Days, 2 Campaigns, 1 Goal

Memorial Day (May 26, 2008) and Labor Day (September 2, 2008) are the unofficial start and end of summer, but to Louisiana State Police – Troop A the dates signal the beginning and end of the “99 Days of Summer.” With 54 days remaining, Troop A will participate in two high visibility enforcement campaigns, Summer Heat and Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest., with one goal in mind – saving lives.

Over the next five weeks (July 11 – August 16, 2008), Troopers will be participating in the third annual “Summer Heat” campaign. “Summer Heat” is a high visibility enforcement campaign with an emphasis on speeding drivers. Troop A will use funding from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission to increase the number of troopers on the road, and work with local law enforcement partners to conduct speed enforcement throughout the campaign.

Nationally, 41 percent of the drivers with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher involved in fatal crashes were speeding. This statistic and Troop A’s participation in “Drunk Driving. Over the limit. Under Arrest.” is the reason Troop A troopers, Livingston Parish Sheriff’s deputies and Walker Police officers will conduct a sobriety checkpoint in Walker, LA between 9:00 PM, tonight and 3:00 AM, Saturday, July 12, 2008.

“Between the sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols, insurance checkpoints, safety belt checkpoints, speed details and concerned citizens…chances are if you speed or drive impaired this summer you will get caught,” said Captain Frank Ducote, Louisiana State Police – Troop A Commander. “To avoid the fines and embarrassment, obey the speed limit and drive responsibly. Designating a driver, taking a taxicab home, staying at your present location or taking a ride straight to jail, the choice is yours,” said Captain Ducote.
