TROOP I NEWS RELEASE June 4, 2023 Unrestrained Woman Dies in Single-Vehicle Crash in St. Landry Parish St. Landry Parish – Shortly before 12:30 p.m. on June 4, 2023, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I were notified of a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 71 north of Louisiana Highway 361 in St. Landry Parish. The crash claimed the life of 55-year-old Melissa A. DeJean of Henderson. The initial investigation by State Police revealed the crash occurred as DeJean was driving a 2022 Buick Encore north on LA 71. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle ran off the roadway to the left and entered the ditch on the west side of the road. After leaving the roadway, the Buick struck an embankment and overturned, causing DeJean to be ejected. DeJean was not restrained and suffered fatal injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is unknown and a toxicology sample was obtained for analysis. This crash remains under investigation. Louisiana State Troopers would like to take this opportunity to remind motorists to always make good decisions while operating motor vehicles. Never drive while impaired, fatigued, or distracted, always ensure every occupant is properly restrained, and follow all traffic laws. While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death. Troop I has investigated 24 fatal crashes resulting in 27 deaths in 2023.
