Baton Rouge Man Dies After Striking Previously Crashed Vehicles

On Wednesday, August 06, 2008 shortly after 8:00 AM, Troop A troopers were notified of a fatality crash that claimed the life of a Baton Rouge man on I-10 eastbound just east of LA 42 (Highland Rd).

Prior to the fatal crash, a 2002 Peterbilt Tractor/Trailer, driven by Timmy Grant (W/M, 48, of Hubbard, TX), and a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, driven by Serilla Ward (B/F, 25, of Port Allen, LA), were stopped on the right shoulder of I-10 eastbound after being involved in a minor crash. The Ford was in a stopped position in front of the Peterbilt. The drivers of these vehicles were standing outside of their vehicles waiting for police to arrive.

A 2001 Saturn 300, driven by Keith Kelly (W/M, 52, of Baton Rouge, LA), was eastbound on I-10 traveling on the right shoulder. The Saturn struck the Peterbilt from behind. The impact into the Peterbilt pushed the Peterbilt into the rear of the Ford. At this time, it is unknown why the Saturn was traveling on the shoulder prior to the crash.

Keith Kelly received fatal injuries in the crash and was not wearing his seat belt. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash; however, alcohol and toxicology analysis are pending. The driver’s of the other two vehicles were standing off the roadway when the second crash occurred and were not injured. No charges have been filed. Tpr. Arman Douglas continues his investigation.
