School Year Traffic Safety Reminders

BATON ROUGE- State Police Troop A is reminding drivers that schools are back in session. It is imperative drivers follow simple rules and know our state laws to keep our children safe.

· Pay close attention to school zone speed limits-School zones are in effect
· Passing vehicles is not allowed in school zones or crosswalks
· Pedestrians in designated crosswalks have the right-of-way
· Vehicles must stay at least 30 feet behind stopped school buses
· It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus that is loading or unloading children

Rules to teach your children:

· Do not cross the street alone if you are younger than 10 years old.
· Always STOP at the curb before crossing the street.
· Walk, do not run across the street.
· Look LEFT, RIGHT, and LEFT again before crossing.
· Walk facing traffic.
· Make sure drivers see you before crossing the street in front of them.
· Cross at least 10 feet in front of a school bus.
· At railroad crossings, stop and look both ways, if on a bike walk it across the crossing.
· When riding a bicycle always wear a bicycle helmet.
· When wearing a bicycle helmet, make sure it fits snug on your head.

Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop A will be enforcing traffic laws and school zone speed limits around Troop A area schools. Together, we can ensure a safe school year.
