TROOP A NEWS RELEASE July 24, 2017 Walker Woman Dies in Two Vehicle Crash in Livingston Parish Livingston Parish – Shortly after 2:00 pm on July 24, 2017, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a two vehicle fatality crash that occurred at the intersection of LA 449 and Varnodo Rd. in Livingston Parish. The crash resulted in the death of 67 year old Deborah Cantrell of Walker. The initial investigation by State Police revealed that the crash occurred as Cantrell was traveling westbound on Varnodo Rd. in a 2017 Volkswagon Jetta. At the same time, 21 year old Brianna Murphy of Weir, MS was traveling northbound on LA 449 in a 2014 Hyundai Sonata. For reasons still under investigation, Cantrell failed to yield at the stop sign and drove into the path of Murphy’s vehicle. The front of Murphy’s vehicle struck the driver’s side of Cantrell’s vehicle in the intersection. Cantrell was properly restrained but sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash. She was transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Walker where she was later pronounced deceased. Murphy was also properly restrained at the time of the crash sustained minor injuries. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash but a toxicology sample will be taken from both drivers for analysis. Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists to obey all posted traffic signs. While not all crashes are survivable, they are preventable. Making the right choices while in motor vehicles such as never driving while impaired, always ensuring every occupant is properly restrained, and avoiding all distractions can often mean the difference between life and death.
