| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE Unrestrained Passenger Killed in Crash on US 61 near LA 64 BATON ROUGE – An unrestrained back-seat passenger died this morning when the vehicle she was riding in ran off the road and struck a tree on US 61 south of LA 64 in East Baton Rouge Parish. A 2006 Mitsubishi Galant, being driven by Devie A. Smith (B/F, age 52) of Houma, was traveling north on US 61 in the right lane when it swerved to the left, veered back to the right, began to rotate clockwise, slid off the road to the right, and struck a tree on the rear passenger door. Witnesses say that the Galant originally swerved to the left to avoid a slow-moving green pickup that was traveling north on US 61 in the right lane. The Galant did not come into contact with the pickup and the pickup continued north on US 61. The driver and her front seat passenger, Martha Lisberg (B/F, age 58) of Houma were both properly restrained and sustained minor/moderate injuries in the crash. The passenger in the right rear seat of the vehicle, Georgia Smith (B/F, age 75) of Houma, was not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred and was killed as a result of her injuries. Smith was pronounced deceased at Lane Memorial Hospital by medical staff. Impairment is not suspected to have been a factor in this crash. However, blood has been taken from Devie Smith and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. SEAT BELTS SAVE LIVES!!! BUCKLE UP!!! For more information contact: Tpr Russell G.
