Baton Rouge Man Killed in One-Vehicle Crash New Year’s Day

BATON ROUGE – An early-morning New Year’s Day crash on Old Hammond Highway (LA 426) claimed the life of a Baton Rouge man. Shortly before 5:00 a.m., Allen T. Melvin (W/M, age 68) of Baton Rouge was driving a 2004 Volkswagen Jetta east on LA 426 when he ran off the road to the left, travelled through a ditch, and struck a gravel driveway. The Jetta vaulted into the air and struck a tree. Baton Rouge EMS Ambulance transported Melvin to Ochsner Hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries in the crash. Melvin was properly restrained when the crash occurred and alcohol is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash. However, blood has been drawn and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis.
