| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP A - NEWS RELEASE Unrestrained Driver Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash BATON ROUGE – Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated its fourth fatal crash of the year early this morning on Interstate 10 west of LA 73 in Ascension Parish. Just before 2:00 a.m., David James, Jr. (W/M, age 19) of Baton Rouge was driving a 2000 Honda Accord west on Interstate 10 west of LA 73 when, for unknown reasons, he made an abrupt steering move and ran off the road to the right. The Honda rotated as it left the roadway and struck a tree with its driver’s side. James was not wearing a seatbelt when the crash occurred, was trapped in the vehicle, and later died from his injuries. Alcohol is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash. However, blood has been taken and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. Louisiana State Police continues to see a troubling problem here and around the state with the lack of seatbelt use. Wearing a seatbelt greatly improves chances of survival in crashes and greatly decreases the risk of serious injuries to the person not wearing the seatbelt as well as any other occupants or bystanders involved in a crash. While seatbelt use is on the rise in Louisiana and around the country, Troopers will continue to strictly enforce Louisiana’s Primary Seatbelt Law in an effort to continue to reduce the alarming number of deaths and serious injuries sustained by unrestrained drivers and occupants involved in crashes.
