Multiple Crashes Close Interstate, Leave One Young Unrestrained Passenger Dead

BATON ROUGE – One minor crash, wet conditions, and inattentive drivers led to four additional crashes and one death shortly after 12:30 p.m. today on Interstate 10 eastbound in Iberville Parish. Overall, five crashes occurred on I-10 between Grosse Tete and Port Allen, causing the Interstate to be shut down for over two hours while Troopers and deputies worked through the wreckage. Cooperation between Louisiana State Police Troop A, Iberville Sheriff’s Office, and West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office helped to get the Interstate opened and get traffic moving again. While the Interstate was shut down, traffic was diverted onto LA 77 and to US 190.

In the most severe crash, Ana Laura (H/F, age 14) of Bartow, Florida was killed when she was thrown from the rear seat of the 2003 Ford Expedition she was riding in. Jose Segura (H/M, age 20) of Bartow, Florida was driving the Expedition when he lost control, sideswiped another vehicle, and struck a guardrail. Although the Expedition did not overturn, Laura was ejected through the rear window of the vehicle. Our thoughts and prayers are with this young girl and her family. This horrible tragedy has affected everyone involved. Of all the crashes that occurred over this short time-period, the occupants of the Expedition were the only ones not properly restrained. This is a stark reminder of how important it is to buckle up in the vehicle, whether riding in the front or the back seat. Alcohol was not a factor in any of the crashes. Segura has been charged with Careless Operation and Negligent Injuring. The case will be referred to the District Attorney’s Office for consideration of additional charges.
