Safety Checkpoint Conducted in Ascension Parish

BATON ROUGE – Louisiana State Police Troop A and Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office Motorcycle Units worked together this morning to conduct a successful safety checkpoint on LA 30 west of Airline Highway. Troopers and deputies screened more than 400 vehicles and issued over 60 citations for various offenses over a four-hour period. This is the second of several safety checkpoints Louisiana State Police will be conducting throughout the Troop A area this week. The focus of these checkpoints is awareness. If we screen 400 vehicles and only issue 5 citations, that is a positive thing. That tells us that more people are adhering to the state’s traffic laws. The results of the checkpoint are as follows:

· 26 expired/no Motor Vehicle Inspection Stickers
· 8 not wearing a seat belt
· 3 children unrestrained
· 1 uninsured vehicle (cited and towed)
· 4 illegal window tint
· 8 expired/suspended/no driver’s license
· 5 license plate violations
· 8 warning tickets

Troopers have continued to conduct safety checkpoints along with city police departments and sheriff’s offices throughout the Troop A area. These checkpoints have proven to be a valuable tool in enforcing the state’s traffic laws, working with local departments, and creating more awareness in the motoring public. It was not too long ago that this checkpoint would have resulted in more than triple the amount of seat belt citations issued. People are beginning to understand that seat belts save lives and we are seeing a higher rate of seat belt use than ever before. Troopers will continue to make traffic stops and issue citations for unrestrained occupants in vehicles, especially for children, no matter where they are seated in the vehicle.
