| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP A- NEWS RELEASE Unrestrained Driver Killed in One-Vehicle Crash in Ascension Parish BATON ROUGE - On Tuesday, October 29, 2008 at approximately 12:43 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop A investigated a one-vehicle crash on LA 42 east of LA 930 in Ascension Parish which resulted in the death of a Prairieville resident. Catherine Brown (W/F, age 43) was traveling east on LA Highway 42 in a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee when she entered into a left curve and ran off the roadway to the right. The vehicle entered the ditch, struck a concrete driveway, and overturned several times. Ms. Brown, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was ejected from the vehicle and died as a result of her injuries. Alcohol is not suspected to have been a factor in the crash, but blood was taken from Ms. Brown and submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for chemical analysis. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seatbelt use is at an all-time high. Seatbelt use nationwide is at 83 percent. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that approximately 270 lives are saved for every one percent increase in belt use. Acting NHTSA Administrator David Kelly said a contributing factor for such historically high seat belt use is high-visibility law enforcement efforts, such as the Department’s “Click It or Ticket” campaign. Louisiana State Troopers will continue to enforce the state’s primary seat belt law in an effort to continue this upward trend in seatbelt use. For more information contact: Tpr Russell G.
