Troop A Welcomes Two Troopers to the Motorcycle Patrol Unit BATON ROUGE – Louisiana State Police Troop A is happy to welcome two new troopers to the motorcycle patrol unit. On Friday, October 10, 2008, Louisiana State Police Troop A Troopers Jason Shavers and Quintin Merrett completed the Northwestern Basic Police Motorcycle Operators Course taught by Louisiana State Police instructors. The class was comprised of two weeks of rigorous training located in Kenner, LA. The course covered everything from fundamentals of riding and safety to conducting traffic stops and motor officer survival. The motorcycles are used for traffic enforcement, escorts, parades and other community events. The motorcycle patrol unit at Troop A is very involved with community events, to include safety education and drug diversion. The motor troopers go to schools and daycares throughout the Troop A area and talk to children about bicycle safety, “stranger danger”, importance of seatbelt use, gun safety, and a variety of other topics. They also work closely with city police departments and sheriff’s offices throughout the Troop A area. Together, the agencies are able to increase their ability to ensure safety on our roadways. One of the priorities of the motorcycle patrol unit is aggressive safety and speed enforcement, especially in and around school zones throughout the Troop A area. They will also be focusing on special enforcement areas, such as insurance checkpoints and speed reduction details in areas where speed-related crashes tend to occur.
