| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE News Release Baton Rouge City Police Officer Involved in Fatal Crash At 11:30 PM, on February 25, 2008, Louisiana State Police, Troop A responded to a two vehicle crash that resulted in the death of an on-duty Baton Rouge City Police K-9 officer. The crash occurred on US 61 (Scenic Hwy) north of Thomas Road in East Baton Rouge Parish. A 1996 Freightliner Tractor/Trailer carrying methanol was northbound on US 61. As the Freightliner approached the railroad tracks just north of Thomas Road, the driver activated his hazard lights and came to stop as required by law due to the nature of his cargo. For unknown reasons, the 2005 Chevy Impala impacted the rear of the Tractor/Trailer. The driver of the Chevy, 33 year old K-9 Officer Mark Beck of Zachary, was transported from the scene by East Baton Rouge EMS and pronounced dead at Earl K. Long Hospital. Officer Beck’s K-9 was also in the vehicle and survived the crash. The driver of the Freightliner, 63 year old Bernard Jones of Prairieville, was not injured in the crash. Both drivers were properly restrained. Lt. Cain stated, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Beck’s family and the entire Baton Rouge City Police Department.” For More Information, Contact: Lt.
