| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE State Police, Troop A – News Release For Immediate Release Vehicle Fire Closes US Hwy 190 March 14, 2008 At 4:51 AM, this morning, Louisiana State Police – Troop A was notified of a crash and fire resulting in the closure of US Hwy 190 in both directions. The crash occurred on US Hwy 190 at the eastbound entrance to the “Four Mile Bridge” in Pointe Coupee Parish. A 1997 Freightliner, hauling Whirlpool appliances, traveled eastbound on US Hwy 190 nearing the approach of the Four Mile Bridge when the rear right tire on the trailer failed. The tire failure forced the Freightliner to move to the right and crash into the guardrail. As the Freightliner scraped along the concrete guardrail, the passenger side gas tank ruptured and burst into flames. The fire engulfed the tractor-trailer and caused both lanes of US Hwy 190 to remain closed for several hours. With the assistance of Louisiana State Police – Troop I, traffic traveling on US Hwy 190 from Opelousas to Baton Rouge was advised to take Interstate 10. The westbound lanes of travel were reopened to traffic at 7:20 AM, but the eastbound lanes are not expected to reopen prior to 4:00 PM this afternoon, as workers continue to clean up the debris. The driver of the Freightliner, Thomas Hemphill, Jr. (a fifty-four year old male) from Arlington, TX, was not injured or charged. For more information contact: S/T Johnnie L.
