Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP L NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release December 30th, 2010 Interstate 12 Crash takes Life of South Carolina Woman Today at 1:00 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a fatality crash on Interstate 12 approximately half a mile west of LA 1077 in St. Tammany Parish. Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as a 2001 Ford Expedition, driven by Amado Cardona (H/M age 50) of Arcadia, SC, was traveling westbound in the right lane of Interstate 12 when it ran off road to the right. Upon leaving the roadway, Cardona steered sharply to the left causing the Ford SUV cross both westbound lanes. Cardona then overcorrected back to the right causing the vehicle to rotate clockwise and overturn several times. Cardona was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was airlifted to University Hospital in New Orleans with serious injuries. Alcohol use is not suspected with a blood sample pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Front seat passenger in the Expedition, Severa Cardona (H/F age 47) of Arcadia, SC, received fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office. She was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Two additional male juveniles were riding in the rear seat of the Ford Expedition. The juveniles were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash and were ejected into the grass median of Interstate 12 as the vehicle overturned. Both juveniles received only moderate injuries and were transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital. Troopers are continuing their investigation at this time and seeking additional witnesses to the crash. Anyone with further information is urged to contact Troop L at 985-893-6250.
