**UPDATE**
Driver identified in U.S. 90 Fatality Crash

On January 23rd, 2010, the driver of the 2006 Kia Sportage was identified as 43 year old Lisa O’brien of Metairie, LA.

Investigation ongoing in Separate Fatality Crashes

Yesterday evening, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated two separate fatality crashes leaving two dead in Tangipahoa and St. Tammany Parish.

The first crash occurred at 6:15 pm on Interstate 55 approximately one mile south of Kentwood in Tangipahoa Parish. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2010 Ford van, driven by Steven Fowler (B/M age 42) of Hammond, LA, was traveling southbound on I-55 when it struck a pedestrian in the left southbound lane. The pedestrian, identified as Jerome Johnson Jr. (B/M age 20) of Kentwood, LA, had previously crashed his vehicle in the tree line along the interstate when he began walking across the southbound lanes from the median. Passengers riding in Johnson’s vehicle explained that he had attempted suicide by crashing into the tree line before walking into the path of the oncoming Ford van.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. A blood sample is pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Fowler was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured in the crash. He submitted to a breath alcohol test showing no detectable signs of alcohol in his system.

The second crash occurred at 9:15 pm on U.S. 90 at its intersection with Apple Pie Ridge Rd. in St. Tammany Parish. Troopers’ investigation showed that a 2006 Kia Sportage was traveling eastbound on U.S. 90 when it crossed the centerline and impacted an oncoming dump truck in the westbound lane. Upon impact, the Kia Sportage became engulfed in flames and was pushed approximately 156 feet in a westerly direction before it came to rest on the right side of the roadway.

The driver of the Kia was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office. Identification of the driver is pending due to the extent of the fire. Alcohol use is unknown at this time. Driver of the dump truck, Terrance Jordan (B/M age 38) of Marrero, LA, was transported to the Ochsner Northshore Medical Center with minor injuries. Jordan was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash and alcohol use is not suspected with a blood sample pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.

Troopers are continuing their investigation into both crashes.
