Covington Crash takes Life of Two Year Old Passenger

Covington – This morning at 07:55 am, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a three vehicle fatality crash on LA 437 (Lee Rd.) approximately 4 miles north of U.S. 190 in St. Tammany Parish.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as a 2004 Pontiac Grand Am, driven by Sarah Givens (W/F age 24) of Covington, LA, was stopped in the northbound lane of LA 437 preparing to make a left turn onto Tice Road. A 1995 Mack dump truck, driven by Harry Lawrence Jr (W/M age 63) of Lacombe, LA, was traveling northbound on LA 437 approaching the intersection with Tice Road. Upon reaching the intersection, Lawrence failed to observe the Pontiac stopped in the roadway and impacted the right rear bumper of the vehicle pushing it into the southbound lane of travel. As the Pontiac entered the southbound lane of LA 437, it was impacted on its right passenger side by a 1995 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck, driven by Maria Board (W/F age 55) of Covington, LA.

Givens was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was air lifted to University Hospital in New Orleans with serious injuries.
A two year old passenger in the Pontiac, Mason Givens (W/M age 2) of Covington, LA, was properly restrained in a child safety seat in the rear of the vehicle at the time of the crash. The two year old sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office.

Board was transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital with minor injuries. She was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Lawrence was wearing his seatbelt and received no injuries from the crash. He was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail charged with one count each of Careless Operation, Negligent Injury, and Negligent Homicide.

Alcohol use is not suspected to be a factor in the crash with a blood sample from each driver pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
