| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP L NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release November 23rd, 2010 Click It or Ticket Thanksgiving Holiday Enforcement The Thanksgiving holiday weekend is traditionally one of the busiest travel periods of the year. In response, the Louisiana State Police will have an increased number of troopers on patrol this weekend working to keep motorists safe. This extra allocation in manpower is made possible by overtime funds provided by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission. Particular attention will be paid to seat belt use and to those that choose not to put their children in appropriate child restraints. Louisiana law requires that all occupants be properly restrained regardless of their age or seating position. While not all crashes are survivable, seat belts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. In 2009, 65% of drivers killed in Louisiana were not wearing a seat belt. “Sadly, the holidays, which for many are the happiest time of the year, is also one of the deadliest and most tragic,” said Colonel Mike Edmonson, State Police Superintendent. So far in 2010, Troop L has investigated 32 fatality crashes, arrested 1,477 impaired drivers, and issued 9,147 seat belt tickets. Troop L’s commitment to aggressive DWI enforcement and hazardous moving violations has resulted in a decrease in fatality crashes compared to 2009. “The decrease in fatalities since 2009 shows the impact that can be made in our community by aggressively enforcing those violations that lead to serious crashes,” states Captain Paul Clark, Troop L Commander. “Troopers are dedicated to patrolling the roadways in an effort to ensure a safe holiday season for everyone.” Due to an anticipated increase in traffic volume, troopers ask motorists to please exercise patience and recommend allowing extra time to get to your destination. The public can expect to see an increase in the number of troopers patrolling the highways and violations, which affect public safety, will be aggressively enforced.
