| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP L NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release November 25th, 2010 One killed, Two injured in Overnight Crashes Troop L – During the early hours of November 25th, 2010, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated two separate one vehicle crashes resulting in one fatality and two injured. The first crash occurred at approximately 12:24 am on Interstate 55 at milepost #38 two miles south of LA 1063 in Tangipahoa Parish. Jessica Barcia (W/F age 19) of Albany, LA, was traveling south on I-55 in a 1998 Nissan Pathfinder when, for unknown reasons, her vehicle drifted off road to the right. Upon leaving the paved roadway, the Pathfinder traveled through a ditch and struck several trees before coming to rest on the west side of the interstate. Both Barcia and front seat passenger, Morgan Easley (W/M age 18) of Osyka, MS, were transported to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond with Barcia in critical condition and Easley suffering only minor injuries. Both occupants were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash and alcohol use is not suspected. The second crash occurred at 2:30 am on LA 435 approximately 3.5 miles east of LA 59 in St. Tammany Parish. A 1992 Honda Accord, driven by Brandon Miller (W/M age 26) of Covington, LA, was traveling east on LA 435. For unknown reasons, the Accord crossed the center line of the roadway and ran off road to the left striking a mailbox. Upon impact, Miller overcorrected back to the right causing the vehicle to rotate clockwise as it crossed LA 435 and ran off the right side of the road. As the Accord left the paved roadway, it struck a utility pole with its left driver’s side causing Miller to be ejected from the vehicle. Miller was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office. Alcohol use is suspected to be a factor in the crash with the results of a blood test pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. During this busy Thanksgiving Holiday and weekend, Troop L wants to remind motorists to drive carefully this holiday season and make it a safe holiday for everyone traveling on Louisiana’s roadways. Troopers will be on constant patrol focusing on motorists not wearing seat belts, unrestrained children in vehicles, and any aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding, following too close, and especially driving while intoxicated. While not all crashes are survivable, seat belts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury.
