Bicyclist killed in LA 16 Crash

Yesterday evening at 06:30 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a fatality crash on LA 16 approximately 1.5 miles east of LA 63 in St. Helena Parish.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as a 2002 Ford Explorer, driven by Jarmarcus Gray (B/M age 25) of Denham Springs, LA, was traveling west on LA 16. A bicyclist, identified as James Moorhead (W/M age 57) also of Denham Springs, LA, was traveling west on the westbound shoulder of LA 16 ahead of the Explorer. As the Explorer and bicycle continued west of LA 16, Gray failed to maneuver a left hand curve in the roadway causing the SUV to run off road to the right and impact the bicycle. Upon collision, Moorhead was ejected from the bicycle and came to rest in the ditch on the north side of LA 16.

Moorhead was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and was airlifted to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in serious condition. Upon arrival at the hospital, he was pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Alcohol and drug use is not suspected.

Gray was wearing a seatbelt and received no injuries in the crash. He submitted to a breath alcohol test showing no detectable signs of alcohol in his system. Gray was booked into the St. Helena Parish Jail charged with Careless Operation and Negligent Homicide.
