The crash occurred approximately one mile east of the LA 445 Robert exit. Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer was traveling east on Interstate 12 when its left rear tire suddenly deflated. Upon the sudden tire deflation, the driver of the Mountaineer, Terry Whateley (W/M age 38) of Independence, LA, steered sharply to the right causing the SUV to rotate clockwise and overturn. Rear seat passenger of the Mountaineer, Joseph Whateley (W/M age 66) of Independence, LA, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was transported to North Oaks Medical Center in serious condition. He was later pronounced dead as a result of his injuries. Terry Whateley and front seat passenger, Leonard Albarado Jr. (W/M age 40) of Hammond, LA, were wearing seatbelts and received minor injuries in the crash. Alcohol use is not suspected to be a factor with a blood sample pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Troopers are continuing their investigation and charges are pending.
