Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP L NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release February 9th, 2011 Health Center Employee arrested for Prescription Fraud St. Helena Parish- In a continuing effort to combat prescription medication fraud across the state, Louisiana State Police Narcotic Detectives have charged a Greensburg woman with 8 counts of Obtaining a Controlled Dangerous Substance by Fraud. The investigation began in September of 2010 when LSP Narcotic Detectives were contacted by the Greensburg Police Department in reference to a complaint into a former employee of the Southeast Community Health Center. Troopers’ investigation revealed that the former employee, identified as Gwendolyn Atkins (B/F age 49), was providing fraudulent prescriptions to patients for controlled dangerous substances during the time that she was employed at the health center. After an arrest warrant was obtained, Atkins surrendered herself to investigators on February 8th, 2011 and was booked into the St. Helena Parish Jail on the above charges. Louisiana State Police Narcotic Detectives provide the citizens of Louisiana a safer community through proactive drug related enforcement and cooperative efforts with local and federal law enforcement agencies. Through participation in the Pharmaceutical Drug Diversion Program, troopers work to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public by ensuring all of the laws pertaining to pharmacy and controlled dangerous substances are followed by both registrants and any others who handle or possess pharmaceuticals. Narcotic Detectives work closely with the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy and its Prescription Monitoring Program to monitor all scheduled narcotic prescriptions and prescription medication that has a potential for abuse.
