Seatbelts Save Lives – Click It or Ticket National Campaign

In an effort to increase seatbelt use and save lives, The Louisiana State Police will team up with law enforcement agencies across Louisiana and the United States to participate in high-visibility seat belt enforcement in conjunction with the nationwide Click It or Ticket campaign. The campaign will run May 24 - June 6, 2010.

During Click It or Ticket, a national enforcement mobilization that encourages all motorists to wear their seat belts – day and night, troopers will be focusing on motorists not wearing seat belts, unrestrained children in vehicles, and any aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding, following too close, and driving while intoxicated.

Louisiana law requires everyone in a vehicle to be properly restrained. Seat belts are the most effective safety feature available in vehicles today; still nearly one in five Americans fail to regularly wear a seat belt when driving or riding in a motor vehicle. In 2008 alone, seat belts saved 13,250 lives nationwide. The high-visibility enforcement of the Click It or Ticket campaign is credited with increasing the national belt usage rate from 58 percent in 1994 to an observed usage rate of 84 percent in 2009. The usage rate in Louisiana is currently 75 percent.

Lack of seatbelt usage is still the leading cause of fatalities in motor vehicle crashes. While not all crashes are survivable, seatbelts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and will greatly reduce the extent of injury. Lack of seatbelt usage remains a common denominator in the majority of fatal crashes worked by Troop L.
