U.S. 190 Crash takes Life of Covington Woman

Covington – Yesterday at 2:40pm, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a four vehicle fatal crash on U.S. 190 approximately 1 mile east of LA 1077 in St. Tammany Parish.

The crash occurred as a 1997 Ford Taurus, driven by Nathan Blappert (W/M age 19) of Lacombe, LA, was traveling west on U.S. 190. A 2007 Ford F-450 truck, driven by Rodney Hoyt (W/M age 43) of Holden, LA, was traveling west on U.S. 190 directly behind the Taurus. While proceeding west on U.S. 190, Blappert slowed to make a left turn onto Sierra Lane when his Taurus was rear ended by the Ford F-450. After impact, the Taurus was pushed into the eastbound lane and was impacted head-on by a 2002 Dodge Neon, driven by Lisa Scherer (W/F age 52) of Covington, LA. The Ford Taurus then rotated counterclockwise and was struck again on its rear passenger side by a 2007 GMC Yukon, driven by Amy Mcrae (W/F age 37) of Baton Rouge, LA.

Blappert was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and was transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital with minor injuries. Alcohol use is not suspected, however, a routine toxicology test is pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.

The front seat passenger in the Ford Taurus, Jessica Ricks (W/F age 18) of Covington, LA, was wearing a seatbelt and was transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital where she was pronounced dead due to injuries sustained in the crash.

Hoyt was not injured and was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. Alcohol use is not suspected to be a factor in the crash; however, a blood sample was taken from Hoyt and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Hoyt was transported to the St. Tammany Parish Jail and charged with Careless Operation and Negligent Homicide.

Scherer was wearing a seatbelt and was transported to the Louisiana Medical Center and Heart Hospital with minor injuries. A blood sample from Scherer was submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Alcohol use is not suspected.

Mcrae was also wearing a seatbelt and was not injured in the crash. She was transported to the Covington Police Department where she passed a breath alcohol test.
