| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP L- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release April 26th, 2010 Troopers crack down on Reckless Driving in Washington Parish In an effort to decrease the number of serious injury and fatality crashes in the Washington Parish area, Troop L Troopers along with Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputies have a begun a concentrated enforcement campaign on the state and local roadways across Washington Parish. During the first week of increased enforcement patrols, Troopers have issued 120 citations for hazardous moving violations such as speeding and improper passing, written 37 seatbelt tickets, and have arrested four impaired drivers. In addition, Troopers assigned to the commercial motor vehicle enforcement unit have placed seven 18 wheelers out of service due to safety violations. Over the next few weeks, Troopers will continue to work with local agencies to make the roadways of Washington Parish safe for all motorists. Troopers will be focusing on motorists not wearing seat belts, unrestrained children in vehicles, and any aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding, following too close, and especially driving while intoxicated. Lack of seatbelt usage is still the leading cause of fatalities in motor vehicle crashes. While not all crashes are survivable, seatbelts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and will greatly reduce the extent of injury. Lack of seatbelt usage remains a common denominator in the majority of fatal crashes worked by Troopers at Troop L. To report aggressive drivers or unsafe roadway conditions, you may dial *LSP (*577) from your cellular phone to reach the State Police office closest to you.
