| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP L NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release July 6th, 2010 **UPDATE** During the July 4th “No Refusal Weekend”, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L actively patrolled our area roadways looking for impaired drivers. The “No Refusal” Campaign took place across St. Tammany Parish resulting in 29 impaired drivers arrested for DWI. No warrants were issued as part of the “No Refusal Weekend.” Throughout the rest of the troop area, troopers arrested a total of 48 impaired drivers across the weekend. Troop L did not work any critical injury or fatal crashes. The task of stopping impaired drivers requires the joint effort of law enforcement agencies and the public. By never allowing an impaired driver to get behind the wheel of a vehicle and reporting dangerous drivers to law enforcement, the public can play an important role in the reduction of crashes caused by impaired drivers. Contact the Louisiana State Police by dialing *LSP or (*577) on your cell phone to report impaired drivers and dangerous roadway conditions. The only designated driver is the person who has had NO ALCOHOL. Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving this Holiday Weekend As a busy 4th of July weekend approaches, Troop L wants to remind motorists to drive carefully and make it a safe holiday for everyone traveling on Louisiana’s roadways. With the onset of weekend activities comes an increase in traffic on our highways. Unfortunately, the holiday festivities can also lead to an increase in drunk driving. Crashes involving serious injuries and fatalities are historically attributed to impaired drivers during holiday weekends. Louisiana State Police Troop L is joining with other state and local law enforcement agencies to get impaired drivers off of the roads and remind motorists this 4th of July weekend that Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving. Troop L hopes to reduce traffic fatalities on our highways during this holiday with troopers focusing on motorists not wearing seat belts, unrestrained children in vehicles, and any aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding, following too close, and especially driving while intoxicated. To ensure the safety of everyone this holiday, Troop L will once again be participating with local agencies in conducting a No Refusal weekend across St. Tammany Parish. The implementation of the No Refusal weekend is based on the nationwide trend during certain holiday periods when alcohol consumption is likely to increase. The loss of life associated with impaired drivers causes a tremendous amount of grief to survivors for the remainder of their lives. To combat this trend and reduce the number of injuries and fatalities caused by impaired drivers, Troop L and other law enforcement agencies will implement the No Refusal initiative to ensure that every person arrested for DWI will submit to a test.
To report aggressive drivers or unsafe roadway conditions, you may dial *LSP (*577) from your cellular phone to reach the State Police office closest to you.
