| TROOP L NEWS RELEASE April 4th, 2012 Fiery Crash takes Life of Amite Resident Amite, LA – Yesterday evening at 10:40 pm, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a single vehicle fatal crash on LA 1054 approximately 2 miles south of LA 16 in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash took the life of the 25 year old driver, Michael Jones Jr. of Amite, LA. Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Jones was traveling north on LA 1054 in a 2007 Hyundai Sonata when, for unknown reasons, he failed to maneuver a curve in the roadway and began to run off road to the right. Upon leaving the roadway, Jones overcorrected back to the left causing the Hyundai to reenter LA 1054 and continue across the north and southbound lanes before running off road to the left. As the Hyundai continued off road on the west side of LA 1054, it impacted a tree with its left front end and became engulfed in flames. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. Due to the extent of the fire, seatbelt use is unknown, however investigating Troopers suspect alcohol impairment to have been a factor in the crash. A blood sample was obtained from Jones for analysis at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. The consequences of drinking and driving can be costly no matter how many drinks you have consumed. Driving while impaired and lack of seat belt use continues to be contributing factors in a large majority of fatal crashes across the nation. By taking precautionary steps including never driving while distracted or impaired and always wearing a seatbelt, motorists can substantially reduce their risk of being involved and/or injured in a crash.
