| TROOP L NEWS RELEASE April 17th, 2012 One Fatality, Several Injuries reported in Crashes along Interstate 12 As a strong line of storms moved along the Interstate 12 corridor in St. Tammany Parish this afternoon, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to over a dozen traffic incidents including several injury crashes and one fatal crash. The crashes resulted from inclement weather conditions combined with driver violations including following too closely, improper lane use, speeding, and driving while distracted. At approximately 1:50 pm, Troopers began investigating a four vehicle fatal crash in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 12 half a mile east of the Airport Rd. / Northshore Blvd. exit in Slidell, LA. Prior to the fatal crash, traffic had slowed to a stop in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 12 due to a previous injury crash. Preliminary investigation revealed that the fatal crash occurred as a 2011 Nissan Altima, driven by 33 year old Adam Livingston of Pearl River, LA, was traveling east in the right lane of Interstate 12 when it moved to the left lane to pass a slower moving vehicle. As Livingston attempted to merge back into the right lane, he lost control of his vehicle and veered onto the eastbound I-12 on ramp from Airport Road. As the Nissan entered the on ramp, it impacted a 2011 Chevrolet SUV driven by Samuel Pescay Jr (age 73 of Covington, LA). After impact with the Chevrolet, the Nissan Altima continued in an easterly direction sideswiping a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt, driven by Michael Prothro (age 39 of Picayune, MS), before continuing forward and impacting the rear of a 2005 Freightliner 18 wheeler. Prior to impact, both the Freightliner, driven by 31 year old Amado Macias of Laredo, TX, and the Chevrolet Cobalt were stopped in the right eastbound lane of Interstate 12 due to the previous crash. Neither Pescay, Prothro, nor Macias were injured in the crash. Livingston received fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office. Toxicology results are pending an autopsy by the Coroner’s office. All individuals in the crash were wearing seatbelts and impairment is not suspected to be a factor. During times of inclement weather, drivers are reminded to slow down and take extra precautions as decreased traction on wet roadways combined with dangerous driving behavior often leads to tragic events. Troopers see first-hand the consequences of aggressive and reckless driving far too often while investigating crashes. Motorists are urged to remain vigilant while driving especially during hazardous road conditions and never drive while distracted, fatigued, or impaired.
