| TROOP L NEWS RELEASE May12th, 2012 Troopers investigate Fatal Crash on I-10 in Slidell Slidell, LA –This morning shortly after 7:00 am, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L began investigating a two vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 10 approximately one mile east of the I-10, I-12, and I-59 junction in St. Tammany Parish. The crash took the life of 38 year old Houma resident Bobby Lott Jr. and sent two others to a Slidell area hospital with minor to moderate injuries. The crash occurred as Lott was traveling west in the left lane of Interstate 10 in a 2007 Ford Mustang. Traveling west in the right lane next to the Ford Mustang, was a 2009 Ford Fusion driven by 30 year old Joseph Butler Jr of Gulfport, MS. As both vehicles proceeded westbound, Lott failed to maintain control of his vehicle causing it to drive off the left side of the highway into the grass median. The Mustang continued off road for approximately 300 feet before Lott overcorrected back to the right reentering the roadway and impacting the left rear side of the Ford Fusion with its front end. After impact, both vehicles overturned several times and exited the roadway on the north side of the interstate where they came to rest. Butler and front seat passenger in the Ford Fusion, 34 year old Janelle Butler, received minor to moderate injuries in the crash and were transported to the Ochsner Northshore Medical Center in Slidell. Lott received fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office. All occupants were properly restrained at the time of the crash and alcohol use is not suspected pending the results of toxicology exams. While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving, never drive while fatigued, and avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver’s attention away from the road. Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
