| TROOP L NEWS RELEASE February 23rd, 2012 Lacombe Woman killed in Crash on U.S. 190 Lacombe, LA – Yesterday evening at 8:30pm, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a two vehicle fatal crash on U.S. 190 approximately 1 mile west of LA 434 in St. Tammany Parish. The crash took the life of 86 year old Lacombe resident Ruth Hawley and resulted in the arrest of 29 year old Ahmed Farah of Atlanta, GA. Troopers’ investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Farah was traveling east on U.S. 190 in a 2007 Freightliner 18 wheeler when he attempted to make a U-turn in a curve in the roadway. As the Freightliner’s trailer was positioned across the roadway, Hawley entered the curve traveling west in a 2011 Chrysler 200 sedan and impacted the right rear side of the trailer. Hawley suffered fatal injuries as a result of the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office. Farah was not injured in the crash. Both drivers were properly restrained and neither alcohol nor drug impairment is suspected to be a factor in the crash. Farah was placed under arrest and booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail on charges of Prohibited Turning in a Curve and Negligent Homicide. Louisiana law prohibits drivers from turning in a curve or upon the crest of a hill where the turning vehicle is not visible to drivers approaching from either direction within 500 feet. Troopers urge motorists to remember fundamental traffic safety laws such as turning in a curve or following too closely that when followed can help prevent motor vehicle crashes. While numerous factors including driver impairment and/or distraction often contribute to crashes, troopers often discover that simple traffic safety violations are the primary cause of the majority of motor vehicle crashes investigated each day. The task of making our roadways safer requires a joint effort between law enforcement and the public through responsible behavior behind the wheel and the reporting of dangerous drivers to authorities. Motorists are urged to dial *LSP (*577) from a cellular phone to report possibly impaired, distracted, or dangerous drivers or other hazardous roadway conditions to the nearest Louisiana State Police office.
