| TROOP L NEWS RELEASE March 21st, 2012 Pedestrian killed in Crash on LA 442 Tickfaw, LA – This morning shortly before 10:00 am, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a fatal crash involving a pedestrian on LA 442 approximately two miles east of Interstate 55 in Tangipahoa Parish. The pedestrian, 41 year old Kimberly Wright of Independence, LA, received fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. Investigating Troopers report that the crash occurred as Wright exited her driveway along LA 442 to check her mailbox located on the opposite side of the highway. After retrieving her mail, she attempted to cross LA 442 and stepped into the eastbound lane directly into the path of an eastbound 2011 Buick Lucerne. Wright was struck by the front end of the Buick as she stepped into the roadway sustaining fatal injuries. The driver of the Buick, Rebecca Powell (age 63 of Independence, LA) was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was transported to North Oaks Medical Center with minor injuries. Impairment is not suspected with toxicology results pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. No charges have been filed at this time. Troopers urge both motorists and pedestrians to remain vigilant while on area roadways and pay close attention to their surroundings. Distraction, whether behind the wheel or as a pedestrian, decreases awareness and reaction time possibly leading to life changing consequences. Louisiana State Law requires pedestrians to utilize sidewalks where accessible or walk along the left shoulder as far away from the roadway as possible. Pedestrians should walk against the flow of traffic, wear light colored clothing, and stay out of the travel lanes at all times.
