Motorcyclist killed in Crash on LA 1054

Independence, LA – Earlier this afternoon shortly before 5:00pm, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a fatal crash on LA 1054, approximately one mile north of LA 40 in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash took the life of the 21 year old motorcyclist Keidreyun Alexander of Independence, LA.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Alexander was operating his 2005 Suzuki motorcycle northbound on LA 1054. While traveling northbound, Alexander failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway causing the motorcycle to cross the southbound lane of LA 1054 and enter the ditch on the west side of the road. Upon leaving the roadway, Alexander was ejected from the bike and impacted a metal culvert before coming to rest in the ditch.

Alexander sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. He was wearing a DOT certified helmet at the time of the crash and impairment is not suspected with the results of a toxicology exam pending at the coroner’s office.

Alexander did not have a motorcycle endorsement on his driver’s license and troopers suspect that driver inexperience may have been a factor in the crash. According to statistics from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, in 2011 motorcyclists were involved in over 1500 crashes across the state resulting in 67 fatalities. Through participation in certified training programs, riders are educated on safe riding practices including: being visible, dressing for safety, applying effective riding strategies, and knowing the capabilities and limitations of their bike. Motorcyclists are taught how to apply these safety practices to not only avoid being involved in a crash but to greatly reduce the chance of injury should a crash occur.
