| TROOP L NEWS RELEASE March 18th, 2012 Early Evening Crash takes Life of Bush Resident Covington, LA – Earlier this evening shortly after 5:00pm, Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a single vehicle fatal crash on LA 40 approximately one mile east of LA 437 in St. Tammany Parish. The crash took the life of 61 year old John Tanner of Bush, LA. Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Tanner was traveling west on LA 40 in his 2003 Chevrolet Corvette when he failed to negotiate a curve and began to run off road to the right. Tanner overcorrected back to the left causing the Corvette to rotate counterclockwise and cross both lanes of LA 40. After crossing the eastbound lane, the Corvette ran off road on the south side of the highway and struck a ditch embankment with its right front end. Tanner was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital where he was pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. At this time, impairment is not suspected with toxicology results pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. While fatal crashes across our state have steadily decreased over the past several years, Troopers witness firsthand the remarkable difference the use of a seatbelt makes in reducing injuries and fatalities in crashes. Wearing a seatbelt is the single most effective decision a driver or passenger can make to protect themselves in a crash.
