| TROOP L NEWS RELEASE August 9th, 2012 Unrestrained Mississippi Driver Killed on Interstate 55 Kentwood, LA- This morning shortly after 7:00am, an Osyka, MS resident lost her life in a single vehicle crash on Interstate 55 approximately three miles north of the Kentwood exit in Tangipahoa Parish. The driver, 43 year old Rhonda Davis-Strickland, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office. Troopers’ investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Strickland was traveling south on Interstate 55 in a 2008 Honda Accord when, for unknown reasons, her vehicle ran off road to the right and struck a bridge rail on a small interstate overpass. After impact, the Honda rotated counterclockwise while traveling in an easterly direction crossing the southbound lanes and the center median of Interstate 55. Upon crossing the median, the vehicle overturned several times and came to rest in the right northbound lane of the roadway. Investigating Troopers do not suspect driver impairment to be a factor in the crash, pending the results of a toxicology exam. While not all crashes are survivable, seat belts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Troopers witness firsthand the remarkable difference the use of a seatbelt makes in reducing injuries and fatalities in crashes. Louisiana law requires every vehicle occupant, front seat and back seat, to be properly restrained day or night. Taking the time to buckle up every trip and every time is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
