Alcohol Use suspected in Slidell Fatal Crash

Slidell, LA – Yesterday evening at 10:30pm, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a one vehicle fatality crash on Interstate 10 approximately half a mile south of the Interstate 10, 12, and 59 junction in St. Tammany Parish.

Troopers’ investigation revealed that the crash occurred as a 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis, driven by Curtis Cameron (W/M age 28) of Hattiesburg, MS, was traveling east on Interstate 10 when, for unknown reasons, it drifted off the left side of the roadway into the median. Upon entering the center median, the Mercury proceeded down the grass slope and impacted a DOTD sign support with its front and left side. After impact, the vehicle came to rest in the median between the I-10 eastbound guardrail and the sign support post.

Cameron was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office. Alcohol use is suspected with a blood sample submitted to the St. Tammany Coroner's Office for analysis.

Front seat passenger in the Mercury, Katrina Cameron (W/F age 28) also of Hattiesburg, MS, was wearing a seatbelt and was transported to Ochsner Northshore Medical Center with severe injuries. Due to the extent of her injuries, she was later airlifted to University Hospital in New Orleans for further medical treatment.

The consequences of drinking and driving can be costly no matter how many drinks you have consumed. Driving while impaired and lack of seat belt use continues to be contributing factors in a large majority of fatal crashes across the nation. By taking precautionary steps including never driving while distracted or impaired and always wearing a seatbelt, motorists can substantially reduce their risk of being involved and/or injured in a crash.
