| LOUISIANA STATE POLICE COURTESY LOYALTY SERVICE Colonel Michael D. Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP L NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release May 21st, 2011 Kentwood Resident succumbs to Injuries following Motorcycle Crash Folsom- Yesterday at 12:40 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a serious injury crash at the intersection of LA 40 and LA 1080 approximately 2 miles east of Folsom in St. Tammany Parish. Troopers’ investigation revealed that the crash occurred as a 2000 Mazda 626, driven by Leopoldo Munoz (W/M age 17) of Folsom, LA, was traveling east on LA 40. A 2006 Harley Davidson motorcycle, operated by Jared Guthrie (W/M age 25) of Kentwood, LA, was traveling west on LA 40. As the Mazda approached the intersection of LA 40 and LA 1080, Munoz proceeded to turn left directly into the path of the motorcycle causing the bike to impact the Mazda’s right front corner. Upon impact, Guthrie was ejected from the motorcycle and came to rest in the westbound lane of LA 40. Guthrie was airlifted from the scene to St. Tammany Parish Hospital in serious condition. During the overnight hours, Guthrie was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries sustained in the crash. Guthrie was wearing a DOT approved helmet and impairment is not suspected. Munoz was wearing his seatbelt and received no injuries in the crash. He submitted to a breath alcohol test showing no detectable signs of alcohol in his system. Munoz was booked into the St. Tammany Parish Jail charged with No Driver’s License, Failure to Yield While Turning Left at an Intersection, and Negligent Homicide. The month of May is designated as Motorcyclist Awareness and Safety Month; however, throughout the month, troopers have seen an increase in motorcycle involved serious injury and fatal crashes. Troop L would like to remind all motorists to safely "share the road" with motorcycles and to be extra alert to help keep motorcyclists safe.
