Troop L - NEWS RELEASE Hammond Man Killed in Crash on I-12 Troop L – On November 8, 2011, shortly after 7:00 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a fatal crash on I-12 east near mile post 35.9 in Tangipahoa Parish. Preliminary investigation revealed that a 1999 Ford Explorer, driven by Benjamin R. White (W/M, age 41) of Hammond, LA, was traveling east on I-12 in the right lane. The Explorer was behind a 2005 Freightliner tractor trailer, driven by Melvin Sanchez (H/M, age 45) of El Paso, TX. The Freightliner slowed down due to traffic congestion and the Explorer struck the rear of the Freightliner. White was pronounced dead on the crash scene. Sanchez submitted to a chemical analysis test for alcohol and there was no alcohol detected in his system. Toxicology tests are pending the autopsy for White. Louisiana State Police would like to remind motorists to pay attention to the road while behind the wheel of a vehicle. Taking your eyes off of the road for a few seconds can cause severe crashes. Limit the amount of distractions inside the vehicle and be vigilant of the vehicles around you. Contact Information: Trooper Melissa Matey | |||
