Kentwood Community honors Fallen Hero

Kentwood, LA – Yesterday morning, a gathering of law enforcement personnel, community leaders, and surviving family came together to honor fallen Trooper Rudolph Miller during a ceremony alongside U.S. 51 north of Kentwood. The ceremony was possible due to the efforts of State Representative John Bel Edwards in passing a bill through the legislature to dedicate U.S. 51 from LA 38 to the Mississippi state line as the “Trooper Rudolph Miller Memorial Highway.”

Trooper Miller was killed on September 8th, 1962 when he was struck by a vehicle on U.S. 51 while on a traffic stop with his partner. Despite being a trooper for only 11 months prior to the crash, Trooper Miller was widely respected throughout the community and remembered as a devoted husband and father to his five surviving children.

LSP Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson joined members of Trooper Miller’s family, including Representative Edwards and Sheriff Daniel Edwards, in unveiling the memorial highway sign during the morning ceremony on U.S. 51. “As sworn law enforcement officers, we dedicate our lives to protecting the freedom, safety, and security of the citizens that we serve,” stated Colonel Edmonson. “Trooper Miller devoted and ultimately sacrificed his life while protecting this community that is here to honor him today.”

Since the department’s inception in 1922, 25 troopers have given their lives while protecting the citizens of our state. Further information on Trooper Miller and each of the fallen troopers can be found on the Louisiana State Police Memorial Page at www.lsp.org/memorial.html.
