| TROOP L NEWS RELEASE September 24th, 2011 Troopers investigate Single Vehicle Fatal Crash on I-55 Tangipahoa Parish, LA – This morning at 10:25 am, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a single vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 55 near the LA 10 exit. The crash took the life of 46-year-old Winson Tran of Fallon, Missouri. Preliminary investigation revealed that prior to the crash Tran was traveling south in the left lane of Interstate 55 in a 1998 GMC van. For unknown reasons, the GMC van drifted left into the grass median and traveled for approximately 400 feet parallel to the roadway before impacting a tree with its front end. Upon impact, the van rotated counterclockwise and overturned coming to rest on its right side. Tran was transported to Northoaks Medical Center where he later died as a result of his injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and impairment is not suspected. Toxicology results are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving, never drive while fatigued, and avoid distracting activities, especially the temptations of electronic devices that can substantially divert a driver’s attention away from the road. While not all crashes are survivable, seat belts can greatly decrease the occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Motor vehicle crashes are unexpected events, however, by taking precautionary steps including always wearing a seatbelt and never driving while distracted, motorists can substantially reduce their risk of being involved and/or injured in a crash.
