Troopers investigate Head-on Fatal Crash in Tangipahoa

Tickfaw, LA- Shortly before 6:00 pm this evening, troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop L were dispatched to a fatal head-on crash on LA 442 approximately one mile west of Interstate 55 in Tangipahoa Parish. The crash took the life of 48-year-old Christopher Edwards of Roseland, LA.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the crash occurred as Edwards was driving his 2006 GMC Sierra pickup truck westbound on LA 442 when, for unknown reasons, he drifted left across the centerline of the roadway entering into the oncoming lane of travel. Upon entering into the eastbound lane, the GMC pickup collided head-on with a 2006 Freightliner UPS delivery truck traveling east. Both vehicles sustained severe damage as a result of the collision and came to rest partially across both lanes of LA 442.

Edwards was pronounced dead at the scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office due to injuries sustained in the crash. Due to the severity of the impact, seatbelt use and driver impairment is unknown at this time. The results of a toxicology exam are pending by the coroner’s office.

The driver of the UPS truck, 65-year-old John Burleson of Hammond, LA, was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was transported to University Hospital in New Orleans with serious injuries. Impairment is not suspected.

While the cause of the crash remains under investigation, troopers urge the public to remain vigilant while driving and never drive while fatigued or under the impairment of alcohol or drugs. Motor vehicle crashes are unexpected events, however, by taking precautionary steps including always wearing a seatbelt and never driving while impaired, motorists can substantially reduce their risk of being involved and/or injured in a crash.
