Driver Killed in Crash on LA 1042 in St. Helena Parish

On October 23, 2008 at 7:00 PM, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a two-vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a Greensburg resident. The crash occurred on LA 1042 just west of LA 37 at milepost 3.0 in St. Helena Parish.

A 1994 Toyota pickup, driven by Godfrey N. Butler Jr. (B/M/Age 72) of Greensburg, LA, was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of John Matthews Road and LA 1042. A 1998 Pontiac Bonneville, driven by Amos P. Lee (B/M/Age 22) of Greensburg, LA, was headed westbound upon LA 1042. Godfrey Butler Jr. proceeded to make a left turn onto LA 1042. While making the left turn the Toyota pickup traveled directly into the path of the Pontiac Bonneville. Amos Lee was unable to stop his vehicle and struck the left side of the Toyota pickup with his vehicle’s left front. After impact, the Toyota pickup began rotating counter-clockwise and the unrestrained driver was ejected from the vehicle. The pickup came to final rest facing west in the eastbound ditch. The Pontiac Bonneville began to rotate counter-clockwise, exited the roadway to the left and came to final rest facing west.

The driver of the Toyota pickup, Godfrey N. Butler Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene by Charles Davis of the St. Helena Parish Coroner’s Office, due to injuries sustained in the crash. Alcohol usage by the driver is not suspected; however, blood was obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The driver was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Pontiac Bonneville, Amos P. Lee was transported to Greensburg Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for minor injuries. During the investigation of the crash, Amos P. Lee was found to be impaired. Once released from the hospital, Amos P. Lee was charged and booked into the St. Helena Parish Jail on the following charges, Operating A Vehicle While Intoxicated (R.S.14:98) second offense, and Vehicular Homicide (R.S.14:32.1). The driver was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
