Driver Killed in Crash on LA 59 in St. Tammany Parish

Today, October 28, 2008 at 1:17 AM, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a two-vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a Harvey resident. The crash occurred on LA 59 at the intersection of Viola Street in St. Tammany parish at milepost 1.1.

A 1994 Chevrolet Caprice, driven by Lance R. Salas (B/M/Age 23) of Harvey, LA, was traveling west on Viola Street. A 2006 Dodge pickup, driven by Charles Pearson (W/M/Age 28) of Lacombe, LA, was headed northbound upon LA 59. The driver of the Chevrolet Caprice failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection of Viola Street and LA.59. The Chevrolet Caprice traveled directly into the path of the Dodge pickup. Charles Pearson was unable to avoid impacting the Caprice on its left side. After impact, both vehicles began rotating and traveled off the roadway to the left.

The driver of the Dodge pickup, Charles Pearson, refused medical treatment at the scene of the crash. Charles Pearson submitted to a chemical breath test and the results indicated .000g% BAC. The driver was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Chevrolet Caprice, Lance R. Salas, was transported to Lakeview Regional Medical Center by Fire District #4 to receive medical treatment for severe injuries. Once at Lakeview Regional Medical Center, Lance R. Salas was pronounced dead by Dr. Desalvo due to injuries sustained in the crash. Alcohol usage by the driver is suspected; blood was obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. The driver was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.
