Edmonson, Superintendent TROOP L- NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: September 24, 2008 Two Children Killed in Fatal Crash on LA 1062 in Tangipahoa Parish At 7:42 PM, on September 23, 2008, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a two-vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a one-year-old and two-year-old child. The crash occurred on LA 1062 at milepost 5.6 in Tangipahoa Parish. A 1996 Ford pick-up, driven by Crystal J. Lee (W/F/Age 27) of Loranger, LA, was traveling west on LA 1062. The Ford pick-up attempted to make a left turn into a private driveway. As the Ford pick-up began to make its left turn it traveled onto the eastbound lane and into the direct path of a 1993 Mazda four door. Upon making the left turn, the Ford pick-up struck the Mazda in the left front corner with its left front corner/bumper area. After impact, both vehicles rotated counter clockwise before coming to final rest in the roadway. The driver of the 1993 Mazda four door, Spencer Q. James of Loranger, LA, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for moderate injuries. Alcohol/Drugs are not suspected in the crash, however, blood results are pending. There were five passengers in the Mazda vehicle. Passenger one, Frank James (B/M/Age 18) of Loranger, LA, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for moderate injuries. Passenger two, Mykel Walker (B/F/Age 23) of New Orleans, LA, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for moderate injuries. Passenger three, Erica Perkins (B/F/Age 18) of Hammond, LA, was transported to North Oaks Medical Center by Acadian Ambulance to receive medical treatment for moderate injuries. Passenger four, Makyla Foster (B/F/Age 1) of New Orleans, LA, was pronounced dead at the scene by Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office Investigator, Mark Apperson, due to injuries sustained in the crash. Passenger five, Elishia James (B/M/Age 2) of Loranger, LA, was transported to Our Lady of the Lake by Acadian Air-Med to receive medical treatment for severe injuries. Troop L was notified today by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office that Elishia James was pronounced dead due to injuries sustained in the crash. The occupants in the vehicle did not wear seat belts. No child restraints were used for the two children involved in the crash. The driver of the Ford pick-up, Crystal J. Lee of Loranger, LA, was not injured in the crash, but was taken to Lallie Kemp Medical Center to be checked for injuries. Drug usage is suspected in the crash; blood was obtained and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Once released from the hospital, Crystal J. Lee was charged and booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on the following charges, Improper Left Turn (R.S.32:104), Driving Under Suspension (R.S.32:415), Operating A Vehicle While Intoxicated (R.S.14:98), five counts of Vehicular Negligent Injuring (R.S.14:39.2) and Vehicular Homicide (R.S.14:32.1). The passenger, Michael Lee (W/M/Age 47) of Loranger, LA, was not injured in the crash. Neither of the occupants were wearing their seat belt at the time of the crash.
