For Immediate Release

School Zones are in Effect in the Troop L Area

The end of summer vacation is here and our schools have opened their doors. Troop L would like to take this opportunity to remind our motorist that School Zones are in effect once again. When a school zone is in effect, the speed limit is reduced, and motorist should pay extra attention to children crossing the roadway and the school crossing guard when they are present. Most school zone hours are in effect from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the evening. Although these times are used for most school zones they may vary from school to school, it is the responsibility of the motorist to know and watch for any changes in speed limits and for active school zones. Louisiana State Police Troop L will be patrolling school zones throughout the Troop L area when they are in effect. Any motorist found to be in violation will be cited.

We would also like to remind parents of some general rules you can pass on to your children that may be walking or biking to school this year. Teach your children.

· Do not cross the street alone if you are younger than 10 years old.
· Always STOP at the curb before crossing the street.
· Walk; do not run across the street.
· Look LEFT, RIGHT, and LEFT again before crossing.
· Walk facing traffic.
· Make sure drivers see you before crossing the street in front of them.
· Cross at least 10 feet in front of a school bus.
· At railroad crossings, stop and look both ways, if on a bike walk it across the crossing.
· When riding a bicycle always wear a bicycle helmet.
· When wearing a bicycle helmet, make sure it fits snug on your head.
